By using a reliable and standardized cognitive assessment, it is possible to obtaining a tangible measurement of cognition and compare it to age-group normal values. Although scores differ greatly between person to person, the clinician and client can use the test results to help identify the presence of problem areas.
A neuropsychologist is an expert in assessing cognitive function and may be required to further assess cognitive function, when indicated.
Cognitive assessments have long been the standard for baseline testing for high-risk athletes. It is considered “best-practice” for an athlete to participate in a baseline test, pre-season, in case of a future concussion. The post-injury score on the cognitive examination can then be compared to the baseline test, to assist in decision making for return to play.
